Founded in 1928, Zhongshan Hospital Xiamen University (also known as Xiamen Zhongshan Hospital) was established through donations from patriotic overseas Chinese and prominent local figures to promote the spirit of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s vision of "the world is for all, and the benefit of society." Dr. Lim Boon Keng, the then president of Xiamen University and a medical expert, became the first director of the hospital. With the development of the Xiamen Special Economic Zone, the hospital relocated and was rebuilt as a key supporting project of the zone. It resumed operation on July 1, 1988.
